First we see in the scriptures that we are all in fact accountable:

“For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Cor:5:10For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things [done] in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.) It is unmistakably clear that God holds us responsible for our actions. Ro 14:10 says, “So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.” Heb:4:13And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things [are] naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we [must give] account. also declares that nothing is secret and hidden from His eyes. “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.”

Matt:12:36"But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. shows that we will also be held responsible for our words: “But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.”
