Think it Through
There is a person who makes conversation very difficult. I sometimes find myself asking, why do I bother?, as I walk away from this person. However, this person is old enough to be my parent, possibly has been a christian longer than I have been alive, is much wiser than I and I think has a purpose for the difficult conversation. So now I find myself with the lingering question, what do I have to do to gain from conversing with this person? Hmmm, well...I get angry when this happens, which makes me want to say something back, and leaves my mind too busy with these feelings to hear what is being said. A start would be found in James 1:19-20 [19] So then, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath; [20] for the wrath of man does not produce the righteousness of God. .
